Countr Crush: Kelsey Mulvey

Hi, I’m Kelsey!

I’m a lifestyle writer and editor based in New York City! I’ve previously covered lifestyle at The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, but have since gone freelance. My work has been featured in Apartment Therapy, Lonny, Wallpaper* and many more outlets. I absolutely love all things lifestyle (fashion, beauty, home, you name it!) and believe you don’t have to spend a ton of money to have a glamorous, well-curated life. You can follow me on Instagram at @KMulvs.

Who’s your style icon?

Wes Anderson. He always creates these magical worlds that are equal parts modern, colorful, and whimsical. My favorite Instagram account is @AccidentallyWesAnderson.

What’s your shopping superpower?

As a writer and editor, it’s my job to discover the latest, coolest brands in the lifestyle space. I love telling my friends about new brands, and watching them fall in love with some of my favorite companies! But people who don’t work in media can also possess this superpower! One easy way to find new brands is by scrolling through Instagram and following any accounts you think are cool. I do this all the time!

What’s your best shopping trick? How do you make shopping easier, quicker, or more fun for yourself?

I love fashion, but surprisingly don’t buy a lot of fast fashion! Instead, I have a monthly subscription to Rent the Runway Unlimited, where I can rent and swap up to four pieces at any given time. That way, I get to wear the latest trends without cluttering my closet.  An unlimited subscription is only $159 per month, which is a lot less than what some people spend on new clothes each month. I cannot tell you how many compliments I get on all my rentals!

What is the last item you purchased?

I’m currently coveting Playa’s Endless Summer Sea Salt Spray. My hair is naturally wavy, which can be pretty hit or miss whenever I choose to air dry. This is the one spray I’ve found that tames frizz and gives my hair a “fresh from the beach” look. I spritz my damp hair, air day, and voila! — effortless (but manageable) waves. Playa was founded by a former Vogue Italia stylist, so you know this brand is going to become a cool girl must-have!

What is your favorite purchase ever?

A few years ago, I went to a sample sale and found a beautiful, brand-new suede trench coat from FRAME Denim. There was no price tag on the coat, so I figured I would bring it to checkout and ask a sales clerk. Turns out, the coat was never properly entered into the system, so they sold it to me for $70. I did some research when I got home and found out the coat retailed for around $1,600. I’ve purchased so many pieces that I love since then, but there’s nothing like a ridiculously good deal!

What’s next on your shopping list?

Just one?! I always have an ongoing list of things I need to buy. Here are a few:

N. 1

Megan Phillips “Uptown” T-Shirt

A lot of my close girlfriends and I live in Upper Manhattan, so I want all of us to get these shirts for our uptown girl gang. All of Megan Phillips’ shirts offer a cool, elevated take on the traditional graphic tee.

N. 2

Cesta Collective Full Breton Lunchpail

I used to intern for co-founder Courtney Weinblatt Fasciano when she was an editor at Marie Claire (and always admired her eye for style!),so it’s no surprise her accessories line is indisputably chic. I love stripes — I have way too many striped shirts than I’d like to admit — so this bag will be right at home in my closet.

Snowe Home Flatware Settings in Brushed Gold

I primarily write about home décor and design, so I’m always looking for low-effort items that offer a high-impact flair. This flatware set from Snowe hits the nail on the head. They look great, but are resistant to stains and rust. They’re already on my Christmas wish list!

What’s your favorite online store, and why?

I think Everlane has really revolutionized the way the modern customer shops. It’s one of the first retailers that placed a heavy emphasis on convenience as well as price and quality transparency. The “Choose What You Pay” section is genius! I’m obsessed with Everlane’s cropped mockneck shirts and cashmere sweaters — the latter is only $100!  — and I’m dying to get my hands on The Day Heel!

What’s your favorite feature on Countr, And one you’d love to see?

I love the sale section! Finding a good deal is satisfying, but can be incredibly time-consuming. Countr helps take the legwork out of the hunt! I would love to see a section where users can introduce new, up and coming brands to their Style Tribe. There are so many amazing companies doing really cool and innovative things — let’s celebrate them!
